Commercial Management - Nationwide

Project Background

Mantra Services was recently commissioned to provide pre-construction, delivery phase quantity surveying and commercial management services to a UK Main Contractor.

Working in conjunction with the client’s internal teams, the appointment required us to support their in-house commercial management functions across a portfolio of projects.

Under the engagement, our in-house resources completed commercial and contractual reviews of proposed terms and conditions to identify potential risks. These identified risks were then developed into commercial risk registers for the individual contracts. The registers then being monitored, reviewed and updated throughout the lifecycle of a project.  

During the client’s tender process, we developed and produced cost loaded tender programmes to support bid submissions. The programmes then being used as the initial baseline for the project and updated periodically to reflect progress and any impact of contract variations or implemented compensation events.

As part of the procurement phase of a project, we supported the client with the supplier and subcontractor selection process, to ensure the required sub-contract terms and conditions were appropriate for each package and associated level of commercial management risk.

During the delivery phase of a project, working closely with the client’s project teams, any entitlement for individual events impacting time and cost were considered and demonstrated through the provision of impacted programmes. Any mitigation measures considered against the impacts were included. This continued monitoring of the contract position then allowed us to support the client in maintaining the final cost and value outturn positions for a project until completion.

Where required, we provided visible support to our clients in the external negotiation with end users and sub-contractors alike.  

Project Challenges and Our Response

Specific challenges to this engagement were the UK wide remit and working within restricted or secure environments and live operational areas.   

With a UK wide offering, our in-house staff accreditation and demonstrable experience in working within these restricted and constrained environments, we understand the client’s constraints and are therefore able support the projects and provide essential commercial support.

This capability is underpinned by our back office administrative support. Our staff are fully conversant with standard forms of contract, contract administrative forms and notices. This capability allows us to provide a fully supported service to our clients under this type of engagement.
