Utility Plan Searches

Utility plan searches offer a cost effective and efficient service to provide asset owners, operators, maintainers, consultants, contractors and private clients with existing records to assist them in the identification and location of buried utility infrastructure.

Obtaining utility plans is quick and cost effective and can help in the decision making progress when deciding if a full underground utility survey is required.

There are approximately 1.5 million kilometres of buried utility infrastructure in the UK. It is estimated that each year there are 4 million excavations undertaken. The current estimate is that 60,000 service strikes arise from these excavations, although not all figures are reported.

The latest figures from USAG show that the direct cost of strikes which were reported was £7 million. This does not take into account the indirect cost. In addition the reported strike figure for the sample was only around 2000.  The assets at the biggest risk are those owned by telecoms and water companies.

All stakeholders within a project have a duty to understand the risks associated with any excavations on their site

Undertaking utility plan searches for all construction projects reduce financial and health and safety risks exponentially.

Mantra Services have a significant level of experience and knowledge in providing utility plan searches across the UK. This capability has been developed delivering projects for clients within the infrastructure, building and construction, telecommunications and utility sectors.

A comprehensive search across all potential utility providers and asset owners is completed by our in-house teams. All individual provider records and information received is collated into a submission pack and summarised on a project specific report.

Once completed a pack can be used as the basis for a client to make decisions on any further potential investigations required.

Added value services we carry out in-house to compliment and support the initial utility search and further potential investigations required include:

  • Overlay of utility plan searches on a single CAD drawing 2D or 3D
  • PAS128 compliant underground utility survey
  • 2D or 3D CAD models of the survey area
  • Trial holes to verify the location of identified services.
